Check your prepaid balance

There are a few easy ways to check the balance on your prepaid plan. You can call a specific shortcode, send a text, or simply jump onto your provider’s app or website to see your remaining credit, data, and rollover data. On this page, we’ll take you through the different options and share some handy tips to help you stay on top of your usage.

Which number do you use to check your prepaid balance?

Every provider has its own way of doing things. While most Kiwis use apps these days, you can still use SMS or quick-dial codes (known as USSD) to get an update.

Here is how the main NZ providers handle balance checks

  • One NZ: The My One NZ app is the go-to. You can also text BAL to 777 from your mobile or use their online portal for real-time accuracy.
  • Spark: The Spark app or the MySpark online portal are the primary ways to check your balance. Spark has moved away from SMS codes in favor of their digital platform, which gives you a more detailed real-time breakdown of your data and “data clock” usage.
  • 2degrees: The easiest way to check your data, texts and calls is to download the 2degrees app. You can also text bal to 233 or call 200 from your mobile and follow the instructions.
  • Skinny: Text the word BAL to 2424 or log in to the Skinny app for a quick look.

These are just a few examples. To find out exactly how your specific provider works, it’s best to check the support section on their website. If you’re stuck, you can always give their customer service team a bell for help.

Check your balance via the provider’s app or website

The easiest way to keep an eye on your prepaid SIM is usually through the provider’s app or by logging into your account on their website. Once you’re logged in, you’ll get a full breakdown of your credit, rollover data, and when your next top-up or plan renewal is due. Most Kiwi telcos now have “data widgets” for your home screen that make checking your balance even faster.

Tip! With many NZ providers now offering unlimited prepaid data plans, you might be checking your speed cap rather than a dollar balance. If your internet feels sluggish, check your app to see if you’ve used up your “max speed” data allowance for the month.

If you’re using an eSIM (which is now the standard for most new NZ prepaid plans), you can often see a data breakdown directly in your phone’s cellular settings, though the provider’s app will always be the most accurate.

Can I check my prepaid balance from another phone?

Yes, if you check your balance via the provider’s website, you don’t have to do it from your own phone – you can use any device with an internet connection. Usually, you’ll just need to log in to your “My Account” or “Member Area” using your mobile number and password.

If you haven’t set up an online account yet, you might need your SIM card handy to receive a one-time security code (OTP) if you’re trying to log in from a different device for the first time.

Why can’t I see a balance on my prepaid SIM?

Sometimes your balance might not show up immediately after you top up. It can take a little while for the system to process the payment and update your account. The time it takes can vary depending on your payment method.

Instant top-ups via card or Apple/Google Pay are usually immediate, but if you’ve used a manual internet banking transfer, keep in mind it can still take a few hours or until the next business day to process, depending on your bank.

If your balance isn’t showing up even though you’ve topped up, double-check that the money has actually left your bank account. If the funds have left your account, give it a moment to sync with your service. You shouldn’t have to wait more than 24 hours; if it’s still not there by the next day, get in touch with your provider directly to get it sorted.
