Transfer mobile number
Moving your mobile number from one provider to another is known as porting, and the process is usually quick and easy. You only need your basic account details, and you’ll verify the transfer via a secure SMS process once your new provider kicks off the move. Whether you’re signing up for a pay monthly or prepaid plan, your new provider will manage the transfer and ensure your old service is automatically cancelled once the port is complete.
How does porting work?
To protect customers from scammers, New Zealand providers use a secure verification process. This ensures that only the rightful owner can move the number. The system relies on your account information and a unique code or confirmation sent directly to your mobile.
Various ways to start the transfer
- During sign-up: Simply select the option to “Keep my existing number” when ordering your new plan online.
- Via the app: Most Kiwi providers allow you to trigger the move directly through their mobile app once you have your new SIM.
- In-store: If you’re visiting a local retail store, the staff can initiate the porting process on the spot.
What you’ll need
- For pay monthly plans: Your current Account Number. You can find this on your latest bill or in your current provider’s app.
- For prepaid plans: You will usually need your SIM serial number (ICCID), which is printed on the back of your physical SIM card, or available in your phone’s settings if you use an eSIM.
How to transfer your number
- Check your current plan: Most Kiwi plans are now “open term” (no lock-in), but if you are still paying off a phone on an interest-free monthly instalment plan, you will receive a final bill for the remaining balance of the device.
- Order your new SIM: Choose your plan and provide your existing number and account details.
- Verify via SMS: Once the porting process starts, you will receive an SMS on your current SIM card. You must follow the prompts – usually by replying ‘YES’ or entering a code into a portal – to authorise the transfer. This security step is a standard requirement by the NZ Telecommunications Forum (TCF) to prevent “SIM swapping” scams. If you receive an authorisation SMS that you didn’t request, contact your current provider immediately to stop the transfer
- Wait for the switch: Porting usually takes between 30 minutes and a few hours. In New Zealand, this process happens during industry hours: Monday to Friday 8am–8pm, and Saturday 10am–4pm (excluding public holidays)
- Switch SIMs: Once your old SIM loses service, pop in your new physical SIM. If you’ve opted for an eSIM, follow the digital activation prompts in your provider’s app – this is now the fastest way to get connected in 2026.
Can I transfer my number with a prepaid plan?
Yes, absolutely. It works almost exactly the same way as a pay monthly plan. Just make sure your current prepaid service is still active when you start the transfer, as you cannot port a disconnected or expired number.
Keep in mind that any remaining credit or unused data balances on your old prepaid account will be lost once the transfer is complete, so try to use them up before you make the move.
Can I transfer my number if I’m still on a plan?
Yes, you can. Since most New Zealand plans are “open term”, you’re generally free to switch whenever you like. If you’re still paying off a phone, your new provider can still start the transfer straight away, but your old provider will send you a final bill for the remaining device balance (or interest-free payout). It’s always a good idea to check your provider’s app for a payout quote before you make the switch.
